VIII Week in Ordinary Time
1 Pet 1:10-16. Mk 10:28-31
Called to a Holy Hope
1. Word
“Set all your hope on the grace that will be brought to you.” (1 Pet 1:13)
“Many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” (Mk 10:31)
The key word for today is hope.
Not a vague hope. Not human optimism. Christian hope is a disciplined heart turned toward the grace of God.
2. Heart
In the first reading, Saint Peter invites the believers to live with alert minds, obedient hearts, and holy lives. He says: “Be holy, for I am holy.” Holiness is not first of all perfection. It is belonging to God.
The Gospel shows Peter asking Jesus, “We have left everything and followed you.” Peter is not boasting. He is asking a very human question: What becomes of those who surrender everything for the Lord?
Jesus answers with promise and realism. Those who leave everything for Him will receive much more—but also persecutions. Discipleship is not loss without meaning. It is loss transformed into communion, mission, and eternal life.
3. Life
Today’s readings invite us to examine our attachments. What have I left for Christ? What am I still afraid to leave? What do I secretly expect in return?
Sometimes we follow Jesus but keep asking for security, recognition, comfort, and control. Jesus gently purifies our hope. He teaches us that holiness is not measured by what we possess, but by the freedom with which we follow Him.
Ordinary Time begins again with this simple call: live differently, hope deeply, follow freely.
4. Mission
Today, choose one small act of holy freedom. Let go of one complaint. Avoid one unnecessary comparison. Accept one hidden sacrifice. Do one good thing without expecting appreciation.
One Word for the Day
Word: Hope
Grace: To belong more fully to God
Step: Let go of one attachment today
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You call me to follow You with a free heart.
Purify my hopes, strengthen my faith,
and make me holy in my daily life.
Teach me to leave behind what binds me,
and to receive everything as grace.
Amen.
