The Food that God Gives

Jesus refines the searching of those who come to find Him.

The people ask, “What sign will You give us so that we may see it and believe in You?” Interestingly, they themselves refer to a sign they already know—the manna in the desert.

Jesus, however, redirects their understanding of that miraculous food’s source: “It was My Father who gave you the bread from heaven.”

He goes on to declare, “The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Here, “the world” is not just a neutral space but God’s mission field—the place where divine grace is meant to be received. And “life” can be understood as peace, joy, and fullness.

When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life,” He is gently pointing to Himself as that divine nourishment—yet the people still fail to understand.

They are looking upward for signs from heaven, but Jesus invites them to look toward Him.

They cannot see beyond “the carpenter’s son.” They are stuck in a narrow image of who He is.

But God humbles Himself—He condenses Himself, so to speak—and chooses to dwell among us in the form of the Eucharist. The question that remains for us is: Are we ready to recognize Him? Are we willing to journey with Him?

In the first reading today, we see St. Stephen courageously witnessing to the Gospel, paying for it with his life. His boldness springs from the true Bread he has received—the Bread of Heaven, the Bread of Life.
