A House Swept and Put in Order
When the people of Jesus’ time see the mighty works He performs, some accuse Him of casting out demons by the power of the prince of demons.
Today’s Gospel moves through the images of demons, the ruler of demons, and the unclean spirit.
At the end of the passage, Jesus gives an image: a house swept and put in order.
When someone in our house becomes sick, after the illness has passed, we usually clean the bed, clothes, vessels, and everything that person used. Sometimes we even clean the whole house thoroughly.
Why do we do this?
Because if cleanliness is not maintained, the illness may return.
This is also the lesson Jesus gives us for our spiritual life.
We may take part in a retreat, make a good confession, attend Mass, pray sincerely, and cleanse ourselves spiritually. But if there is no continued effort afterwards, the enemy can easily find a way back into our life.
Spiritual renewal is not only about removing what is wrong. It is also about maintaining what has been made clean.
A house that is swept must also remain guarded. A heart that has been purified must also remain watchful. A person who has begun again must continue to walk faithfully.
The same principle is true in every area of life. One good decision is not enough. One day of discipline is not enough. One moment of enthusiasm is not enough. It is perseverance in continuing the good that brings growth. In our spiritual life and in our daily life, success comes through steady and repeated effort.
