XIV Week in Ordinary Time
Hos 14:1-9. Mt 10:16-23
Warnings of Discipleship
The disciples sent by Jesus for mission are called to be compassionate like Him. They announce peace to the people. They heal the sick and bring well-being. They live with fewer possessions. They learn to face opposition with honesty and courage.
If they are good, and if they sow goodness, will the world accept them easily?
Jesus says no. Therefore, He clearly gives them the warnings of discipleship.
First, they are like sheep among wolves.
In the midst of a strong and violent world, the disciples are weak and vulnerable. Therefore, they must be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” They need prudence without deceit, and innocence without foolishness.
Second, they will be judged.
Here we can see the struggles faced by the community of Matthew. After the Ascension of Jesus, believers underwent much suffering. They were brought before councils, governors, and kings. Yet, in the midst of these trials, the Holy Spirit stood with them and gave them words to speak.
Third, they must remain firm.
Matthew calls his community to remain firm in the faith they have received. Because of religious persecution, some people were fleeing from one town to another. Some were even abandoning the faith. Therefore, the lesson of perseverance is placed before them.
In the first reading, the Lord God heals the unfaithfulness and lack of commitment of Israel. He gives them restoration. The great love of the Lord for Israel is revealed here.
What lessons do today’s readings give us?
Being good does not guarantee that only good things will happen to us in this world. Discipleship brings compassion, peace, healing, and mission. It also brings opposition, judgement, and suffering.
Therefore, we must face everything with perseverance.
The Lord who heals Israel’s unfaithfulness will also strengthen our weakness. The Spirit who stood with the persecuted disciples will also stand with us.
To be a disciple is not to live without struggle. It is to remain faithful in the midst of struggle.
