The Apostle’s Work
In today’s first reading, the prophet Hosea uses the image of “child and father.” Earlier, he had presented Israel as a wife and the Lord God as her husband. Now he presents Israel as a child and the Lord as a father.
This image reveals the protection, presence, compassion, and love that the Lord God gave to Israel.
In today’s Gospel, we read the instructions that the Lord Jesus gives to His apostles when He sends them on mission. These instructions contain the main elements of apostolic work: less burden, full dependence on God, proclamation of peace, continuing the journey even when opposition comes, and serving without expecting anything in return.
Each of us, as a child of the Lord God, has experienced His love and compassion. To share this love and compassion with others is our apostolic work.
