XXIX Week in Ordinary Time

Lk 12:13–21

When More Is Never Enough

A man asks Jesus to intervene in a dispute over his family inheritance. Instead of deciding who should receive what, Jesus raises a deeper question: Can possessions give meaning and security to human life?

Jesus tells the parable of a rich man whose land produces an abundant harvest. The man’s problem is not his wealth or his plans for the future. His problem is that he thinks only about himself: my harvest, my barns, my goods, my future. There is no place for God or for the needs of others.

His barns become bigger, but his vision of life becomes smaller.

He believes his possessions will guarantee him many years of happiness. But that very night, his life comes to an end.

Jesus reminds us that possessions can support our lives, but they cannot become the purpose of our lives. Being rich before God means receiving gratefully, using responsibly, and sharing generously.

Today’s invitation: Share something you have been keeping only for yourself.

A question for today: Do I possess my possessions, or do my possessions possess me?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, free my heart from greed. Teach me to find my security in you and my happiness in sharing. Amen.
