XVII Week in Ordinary Time
Jer 18:1-6. Mt 13:47-53
From God’s Hands
In today’s Word of God, we see three word-pictures or metaphors: the vessel in the hand of the potter, the fish taken into the vessel, and the householder who brings out things from his treasure.
The potter uses the clay in his hand as he desires. The clay gives itself into the desire of the potter. In the same way, the people of Israel must give themselves into the desire of the Lord God.
The fisherman keeps the good fish in the vessel and throws away the bad fish. It is God who separates the fish according to their quality.
The householder keeps in the storeroom of his house both the old things — the property received from the ancestors — and the new things — what he has newly earned. When he wishes, he brings them out.
In the same way, one who has learned about the Kingdom of heaven must bring out treasures from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. We may also understand that Matthew the Evangelist is indirectly speaking about himself here. For, he presents Jesus as the fulfilment of the prophecies of the Old Testament, and he records His teachings and mighty works as new treasures.
Let us remember that we are formed from the hands of the Lord God. Let us give ourselves into His holy will. Let the works of our hands become similar to the works of God.
