The Importance of Actions

“The winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not collapse, because it had been built on rock.”

Today’s Gospel concludes the Sermon on the Mount. Like a rabbi ending his teaching with a question, Jesus asks His disciples: On what foundation will you build your life—rock or sand?

The answer is revealed not by words but by actions. Jesus says: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father.”

Faith cannot remain only on the lips. It must become obedience. Both builders hear the words of Jesus. One acts upon them; the other does not. The difference is not in hearing but in doing.

The person who hears and acts builds on rock. Storms may come, but the house remains firm. The person who hears without acting builds on sand. The house may look strong, but it collapses when tested.

Words are easy. Actions require decision, discipline, and perseverance. Speaking about forgiveness is good, but forgiving is better. Speaking about generosity is valuable, but sharing gives those words a foundation. Saying that we trust God is meaningful, but remaining faithful in difficulty proves that trust.

The first reading describes the Babylonian invasion. Jerusalem is captured, the king is taken into exile, and the treasures of the Temple are carried away. The people had abandoned the Lord, their true rock, and placed their trust in false gods and visible powers. They built on sand, and when the storm came, everything collapsed.

Today’s readings invite us to examine our foundation. Is our faith only a collection of words, prayers, and declarations? Or is it visible in our choices, relationships, duties, and service?
