XIX Sunday in Ordinary Time
1 Kgs 19:9, 11-13. Rom 9:1-5. Mt 14:22-33
God Who Seeks Us
God comes in search of us in the despair, discouragement, fear, loneliness, and darkness of our life.
First, God in a gentle sound.
In today’s first reading, God comes in search of the prophet Elijah. The name “Elijah” means “The Lord is my God.” Elijah had faced the four hundred prophets of Baal and had destroyed them. Now Jezebel seeks to kill him.
Afraid of Queen Jezebel, Elijah hides in a cave on Mount Horeb. The Lord comes in search of the prophet who is hiding there. To the one who says, “I am going to die,” God gives a new mission: to anoint the king of Syria, the king of Israel, and the prophet Elisha.
God does not reveal Himself in the whirlwind, the earthquake, or the fire. He reveals Himself in a gentle sound. Elijah recognises God not through violence, but through gentleness.
Second, the meeting of heaven and earth.
In today’s responsorial psalm, the psalmist sings: “Mercy and truth will meet; justice and peace will kiss. Truth will spring from the earth, and justice will look down from heaven.”
The experience of God is the meeting of heaven and earth. This experience is fulfilled in the Christ-event: Emmanuel — God with us.
Third, God who gives salvation.
In the history of salvation, the people of Israel have a special place. God’s promise is given to them. This promise is fulfilled in the Christ-event. But the people of Israel did not accept Christ. Paul feels sorrow about this.
Fourth, God who walks on the sea.
Jesus walks on the sea and comes to meet His disciples. Matthew, Mark, and John record this event. This mighty act shows Jesus as the one who has power over nature. Matthew also makes this event a moment that shows the primacy of Peter by making Peter walk on the sea.
In this event, at first, Jesus is not with the disciples. Then, He appears to their eyes like a ghost. Finally, the disciples make a profession of faith: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
Peter, who knows how to swim, begins to sink. Jesus lifts him up. He also corrects him for his little faith.
Through this event, Matthew helps his community to grow in faith.
What lessons do today’s readings give us?
First, God takes the first step.
God Himself comes in search of us. When tiredness, discouragement, loneliness, darkness, and fear surround our life, He comes near us. Even today, He comes to us through many persons. When we too go in search of others, we carry God into their midst.
Second, recognising God.
Elijah recognises God in a gentle sound. The disciples recognise the Lord in the middle of the sea. Today, we too must recognise God in our midst.
Third, eliminating fear.
The awareness that God is with him removes the fear of Elijah. Jesus removes the fear of His disciples. Where there is fear, faith does not remain.
