XVII Week in Ordinary Time
Jer 14:17-22. Mt 13:36-43
The World Is the Field
Today’s Gospel reading is the explanation that Jesus gives for the parable of the weeds in the field. Jesus says, “The field is the world.”
The Kingdom of God belongs to this world. It must not be separated from the field called the world, nor should it be seen as something lifted away from it. The realities, events, and persons of this world do affect the Kingdom of God.
In the first reading, Jeremiah writes about the pain of exile experienced by the people of Judah. The words, “Prophets and priests wander in a land they do not know,” express the pain of migration. Today, even if the whole world is considered a village, every country and every place still appears strange to the migrant. The expression “wandering in a land they do not know” points to a person’s helplessness and brokenness.
The Son of Man allows the weeds to grow and watches them. He does not try to destroy them immediately.
As long as the field called the world exists, weeds will also exist. Exile will exist. Pain will exist. Inequalities will exist.
One day, all the weeds will be removed. On that day, we too will have been harvested. We will not live to see the world without weeds.
Some biblical passages do not give answers to the questions of life. Instead, they raise new questions and doubts.
