God with the Poor

Today we begin reading from the Book of the prophet Micah. Micah prophesies in a time when injustice and religious corruption were widespread.

He points out three evil actions of the people of his time: desire for fields, greed for houses, and oppression of persons.

Those who had power planned evil even while lying on their beds. When morning came, they carried out their plans, because they had the power to do so.

Because of these evil actions, the poor and the weak suffered. The Lord God stands with those who are affected by injustice.

In the Gospel reading, the Pharisees see the good works done by Jesus. Yet they plan to destroy Him. Jesus, however, continues to do good. He stands with the poor and the weak.

He does not change His path because of the insult or praise of others. He does not stop doing good because others oppose Him.

Today’s readings give us three lessons.

First, like the people of Micah’s time, it is wrong to lie on our beds and make plans to harm others.

Second, we do not need to change our good actions or good character because of the evil actions or evil nature of others.

Third, in every situation, we must recognise the weak and the poor, and stand with them.

The Lord stands with the poor. Those who belong to the Lord must also stand with them.
