XV Week in Ordinary Time
Isa 10:5-7, 13-16. Mt 11:25-27
Magnificat of Jesus
In today’s Gospel, we read the hymn of praise of Jesus.
Just as Mary sang her Magnificat in the house of Elizabeth, Jesus praises God the Father in the presence of His disciples.
The religious leaders of the time of Jesus were not ready to accept His teaching. They also opposed Him. They even said that His mighty works were done through the power of evil spirits.
In this background, Jesus turns to the Father in prayer.
He rejoices that the mystery of the Kingdom of heaven is revealed to little children. Little children are those who are ready to learn, ready to receive, and open to becoming new.
In an indirect way, Jesus praises His apostles. They may not be powerful, learned, or important in the eyes of the world. But they have received what the wise and learned failed to receive.
To understand God, we need the heart of a child.
A child’s heart is humble, open, trusting, and willing to learn. Such a heart can recognise the ways of God.
The first reading reminds us of the danger of pride. Assyria becomes proud of its own strength and forgets that it is only an instrument in the hand of God. Pride closes the heart. Humility opens it.
The wise and learned can miss God when their knowledge becomes pride. The little ones can receive God when their simplicity becomes faith.
Today, let us ask for the grace of a childlike heart.
