Patience amidst Helplessness

Today’s liturgy of the Word places before us the helplessness of two persons.

In the first reading, we see the helplessness of King Ahaz. The reading is set in the background of the Syro-Ephraimite war. When Ahaz hears about the attack of the enemies, he becomes afraid.

Isaiah writes: “The heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.”

This image reveals the confusion within the heart of Ahaz. When human voices become too loud, we are not able to hear the gentle voice of God.

The helplessness of Ahaz creates fear in him. If he wants to overcome that fear, he must trust in God. To overcome the visible enemy, he must trust in the invisible God. Such faith needs great courage.

In the Gospel reading, Jesus reproaches the cities that refused to repent. A question may arise in us: Since Jesus is God, could He not have changed every heart? Again, with our present understanding of religious freedom, we may wonder whether it is acceptable to reproach those who do not believe in a particular religious message.

We may understand this event as the helplessness that Jesus experienced in His human condition. At times, we too say, “Everyone received help from me, but in the end they left me alone.” Jesus seems to experience something similar. Those who heard His teaching and those who benefited from His mighty works did not believe in Him or accept Him as the Son of God.

In His helplessness, Jesus reproaches the cities that did not repent. This reproach can also be understood as a call to conversion.

In our own helplessness, we too sometimes blame God and others.

Today, let us learn patience in the helpless situations of life.

When fear shakes our heart like trees in the wind, let us listen for the gentle voice of God. When our words and works are not received by others, let us not lose heart. The Lord invites us to trust, to wait, and to remain patient amidst helplessness.
