Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time – Thursday
Jeremiah 18:1-6. Matthew 13:47-53
Being worthy!
In the gospel reading, Jesus gives a parable of the kingdom of heaven: fishing net that is thrown into the sea. This parable is like the parable of wheat and weeds. The fisherman is patient till he arrives at the seashore. He keeps the good fish and throws out the bad ones. The fishes that make themselves worthy will get to the house of the fisherman.
At the end of the gospel reading, Jesus gives a word-picture: a scribe who takes from his treasury. This word-picture indirectly refers to the evangelist, who brings forth both the Old Testament and about Jesus.
In the first reading, Jeremiah prophesies near the house of the potter. The Lord wishes that the people of Israel remain his cherished possession.
