Eph 4:1-6. Lk 12:54–59
While We Are Still on the Way
Today, we have many ways of knowing the weather in advance. We can predict whether it will rain, how hot it will be, or how strongly the wind will blow. If rain is expected, we carry an umbrella. If the weather is going to be cold, we dress accordingly.
But are we equally attentive to the feelings of those around us? When someone in our family becomes unusually silent, do we recognise that something may be troubling them? When an opportunity arises to repair a broken relationship, do we make use of it?
We know how to predict the weather, but often fail to recognise what the present moment demands of us!
In today’s Gospel, Jesus points out this very problem. People knew that clouds rising in the west indicated approaching rain and that winds blowing from the south would bring heat. Yet they failed to recognise the signs of God’s Kingdom unfolding in their midst.
The presence of Jesus was God’s invitation to salvation. But many failed to recognise the significance of that moment.
Jesus then offers another example. When someone is going to court with an opponent, they should try to reach an agreement while still on the way. Otherwise, the situation may pass beyond their control.
The expression “while still on the way” is particularly significant.
As long as we are on the way, there is an opportunity to speak. There is an opportunity to acknowledge our mistakes. There is an opportunity to repair relationships and seek a just solution.
But sometimes, we postpone doing good, asking forgiveness, or resolving conflicts. We assume that there will always be more time.
Time is a gift that God gives us. But it is not an unlimited gift.
Jesus invites us to recognise the signs of the present moment and do what is right at the right time. When God calls us today, we should not keep postponing our response until tomorrow.
We cannot change yesterday. We cannot guarantee tomorrow. But today is in our hands!
Today’s invitation: Let us do one good thing we have been postponing. If there is a broken relationship that can be repaired, let us take a safe, honest first step towards reconciliation.
A question for today: Am I postponing until tomorrow the good that I should do today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me the wisdom to recognise the opportunities you place before me. Grant me the courage to do what is right at the right time and the willingness to restore relationships with love and justice. Amen.
