The Watchful Servant

Today, our eyes remain open for longer hours. We spend much of our time looking at smartphones and digital screens. But are our hearts awake? Are we attentive to what happens around us, to the needs of those who live with us, and to the presence of God? Keeping our eyes open does not necessarily mean being watchful. Our hearts, too, must remain awake.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents the example of watchful servants. They are waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet. They must be ready to open the door whenever he arrives. Through this image, Jesus emphasises the importance of vigilance in Christian life.

The attitude of a servant involves two important qualities: responsibility and detachment. Consider a servant entrusted with the key to a house. Possessing the key does not make him the owner of the house. At the same time, he is responsible for keeping it safe. Our lives are similar. Relationships, responsibilities, talents, and opportunities have been entrusted to us. We are called to manage them responsibly without claiming absolute ownership over them.

Jesus presents three signs of vigilance.

The first is “girded loins.” This signifies readiness. A watchful person is always prepared to act when called upon. Readiness means doing today the good that should not be postponed until tomorrow.

The second is “burning lamps.” A lamp dispels darkness and gives light. Faith, hope, and joy must continue to shine within us. The light of our hearts should become a smile on our faces and love in our actions.

The third is “waiting to open the door.” Even while carrying out their responsibilities, the servants remain attentive to the master’s return. Waiting is not inactivity. It is the ability to recognise the people who come into our lives and the God who encounters us through them.

But the greatest surprise of today’s Gospel comes at the end. When the master finds his servants awake, he invites them to sit at the table and begins serving them himself!

The servants remain awake to serve their master. But the master comes to serve them!

Here, the master points to Jesus himself. Jesus reveals himself as the Lord who serves his disciples (cf. Lk 22:27). What he offers in response to our vigilance is not merely a reward, but the grace of sharing his love and presence with us.

Today, a lack of attentiveness creates many problems in our lives. While our eyes remain fixed on screens, we often fail to notice the people beside us. Their voices may reach our ears, but their feelings do not touch our hearts.

When the heart falls asleep, even open eyes fail to see what truly matters!

Today’s invitation: Let us step away from our screens for a while and pay attention to the people around us and their needs. Let us fulfil our responsibilities with awareness and love.

A question for today: My eyes are awake. But is my heart awake?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep the lamp of my heart burning. Teach me to recognise your presence and the needs of others, and to live with vigilance and love. Amen.
