Answering wisely
The readings of the day tell us that conversion is not an emotional act but an intellectual act.
We act on two levels: (a) the emotional level, when we are carried away by our feelings and emotions; (b) the intellectual level, when we choose to respond to the circumstances.
In the first reading, the people of Israel turn towards the idols. They began to relate to the Assyrians, and they went after Egypt. “Let him who is wise understand these things; let him who is prudent know them,” says the Lord. The people of Israel are called to understand the mercy of God.
In the gospel reading, a scribe comes to Jesus with a question: ‘Which is the most important commandment?’ The scribe acknowledges Jesus’ answer—love of God, love of neighbour – and shows his clear understanding. Jesus appreciates him for ‘answering wisely.’
Understanding the commandment is the first step to following it. Further, it is necessary that, at the spiritual level, one act intellectually.
Be it our relationship with God or our relationship with each other, what is necessary is that we act wisely.

Love of God and love of neighbour is a rational act. One must be conscious of loving. (Jubilee A. D. 2025, bite 49)
