Isaiah 2:8-11. Luke 1:39-45

Radiance of the East

“O Oriens, Key of the Day, Radiance of the East, Sun of Justice, come!” Today, the Church invites us to open our hearts to the dawning light of Christ, who breaks through the darkness of sin, fear, and uncertainty.

In the first reading, Isaiah reminds us that the pride and idolatry of humanity cannot withstand the rising light of God. The Lord comes to humble the haughty and lift up those bowed down. In the Gospel, Elizabeth senses this divine light even before seeing it, as the presence of Mary and the unborn Christ leaps within her womb. “Why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” she marvels. Her recognition of God’s presence transforms the ordinary moment into one of joy, revelation, and hope.

The imagery of the East is powerful: in ancient homes, doors faced east to welcome the sun. So too, we are called to open the doors of our hearts and lives to Christ, the true East, whose light brings life and clarity. Just as Elizabeth’s home became a sanctuary of joy at Mary’s arrival, our hearts can become radiant with God’s presence when we welcome Him fully.

“O Oriens,” you shine even in the darkest night. You break through our doubts and fears, our hidden struggles and uncertainties. Today invites us to recognize that the light of Christ is never distant; it seeks entrance into every corner of our lives. When we open our hearts, even in moments of despair, we see that He is already there, illuminating our path and filling us with joy.

Let us, like Elizabeth, rejoice in the coming of the Lord. Let us lift the doors of our hearts to the Sun of Justice, and allow His light to awaken joy, hope, and life within us.
