Your Teacher
The world we live in has become one great classroom. Wherever we turn — YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp — someone is teaching us something. Skills, summaries, reflections, vlogs… these are the teachers of our age. When we listen to them, three reactions often arise: sometimes the message feels familiar, sometimes it seems impractical, and sometimes we wonder, “What would happen if I actually lived this?” Human teachers inspire us, but their reach is limited.
Today’s readings place before us a teacher who knows no limits — the Lord, our true Teacher.
1. “Your Teacher” — the Messiah revealed through Isaiah
To a weary and exiled Israel, Isaiah offers a tender promise: “Your Teacher will no longer hide. His voice will speak within you.” — “This is the way; walk in it.” Once, God taught His people through Moses and through the Law. Now He draws nearer. His instruction is no longer only external; it becomes an inner voice, guiding, correcting, strengthening.
2. Jesus — the Teacher who teaches first through compassion
In the Gospel, Jesus sends His disciples out to announce the nearness of the Kingdom. Before He teaches them with words, He teaches them with His heart. He sees the crowds and is moved with compassion. Compassion is His first lesson. Then come the words. Those who learn from Him must share His message and His mercy.
3. This Teacher still speaks within us today
“Your Teacher…” — this title is meant for us too. His voice whispers within our hearts. But it is often drowned out by the noise inside and around us.
From Word to Life
(a) To hear the Lord’s voice, we must quiet the noise. The constant stream of information, anxieties, and digital distractions easily muffles His guidance. Making space for silence allows His whisper to surface.
(b) The first step in teaching is compassion. This is Jesus’ method. Before explanation, empathy.
In families, parishes, workplaces — true teaching begins with a compassionate heart.
(c) “This is the way” — let us listen for God’s direction. When our path is unclear, our strength fades and our peace is disturbed. Today, let us seek the way He points out in our hearts. And let us guide those who long to find their way.
