Colossians 1:9-14. Luke 5:1-11

From Grace to Mission

1. Strengthened to Live Worthily of the Lord

Scripture: Paul prays that the Colossians may be “filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Col 1:9), so that they may live lives worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit in every good work (v. 10).

Church’s Teaching: The Catechism (CCC 1803) teaches that virtue is the firm and habitual disposition to do good; holiness grows when our knowledge of God shapes our daily choices.

Pastoral Application: Our Christian life is not only about knowing the faith but living it—turning prayer into action, knowledge into service, and grace into fruitfulness.

2. Redeemed for the Kingdom of Light

Scripture: Paul proclaims that God “has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son” (Col 1:13). Through Christ, we have redemption and forgiveness.

Church’s Teaching: Vatican II (Lumen Gentium 9) reminds us that the Church is the pilgrim people called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light.

Pastoral Application: To live as redeemed people means rejecting sin’s power and choosing

Christ’s freedom. Each day we must ask: Do I walk as a child of light, or do I still cling to shadows?

3. Called from Fear to Mission

Scripture: In the Gospel, Jesus calls Peter from his nets after the miraculous catch: “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people” (Lk 5:10). Peter, overwhelmed by his unworthiness, leaves everything to follow Him.

Church’s Teaching: Evangelii Gaudium (no. 120) states that every Christian is a missionary disciple, called to share the joy of the Gospel.

Pastoral Application: God often calls us from our ordinary tasks into extraordinary mission. Like Peter, we may feel unworthy or afraid, but Christ transforms weakness into strength. Following Him means leaving behind fear and trusting His word.

Conclusion

Paul prays that we live worthily, walk in light, and rejoice in redemption. Jesus calls us, like Peter, from fear to mission. Today, the Word challenges us: bear fruit in good works, live as children of light, and follow Christ wherever He leads, trusting that His grace is enough.

In sum, Paul prays that we may be filled with wisdom and live lives worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit in good works. He reminds us that God has rescued us from darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. In the Gospel, Jesus calls Peter from his nets with the words, “Do not be afraid.” Peter, though feeling unworthy, leaves everything to follow Christ. Like him, we are called to live as children of light and trust Christ’s word as we go on mission.
