Treasure and Heart

“If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”

Today’s Gospel presents us with two probing questions: “Where is your treasure?” “Where is your heart?”

The answer to the first reveals the answer to the second. Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

A second question follows: “Where is your gaze?” – “Where are your eyes fixed?” To this, Jesus answers: “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.”

Although these two questions seem different, they are deeply connected. How so?

Let’s take the example of King David and Bathsheba. His gaze first fell upon her. But that gaze, once tinted by desire, extinguished the light within him. Bathsheba became his treasure, because his heart was drawn to what he saw.

What we fix our eyes on becomes our treasure. Our heart follows where our eyes linger.

A similar story appears in the Book of Joshua (chapter 7). The Lord commands the people to destroy everything in the city of Jericho. But a man named Achan sets his eyes on silver and gold, hides them, and becomes obsessed with them. His entire thought is consumed by this hidden wealth. The consequence? Israel is defeated in battle at Ai.

Two spiritual challenges arise from today’s Gospel:

Let our eyes be healthy. That means—free from envy, hatred, lust, and anger. A sound gaze is one that looks with compassion, not possession.

Let God be our treasure. Where God is, let our heart be. When we treasure God above all, everything else takes its rightful place.
