Genesis 11:1-9. Psalm 33. Mark 8:34-9:1
Discipleship that Embraces Suffering
After the revelation that “Jesus is the Messiah,” the pace and intensity of Mark’s Gospel accelerates. The next crucial question is: “What kind of Messiah is Jesus?” Jesus Himself answers: “The Suffering Messiah.”
In the gospel reading, He teaches that anyone who wishes to follow Him must also embrace suffering.
Three dimensions of true discipleship:
1. Self-denial
As human beings, we naturally prioritize our desires and interests. We strive for personal growth and comfort. We seek security and success. However, Jesus calls us beyond self-interest. When we deny ourselves, we become free from selfishness. We begin to think inclusively, considering others as part of our journey.
2. Carrying the cross
Every day, we carry our own crosses. Even small sacrifices—such as waking up early when we desire more sleep—are acts of embracing the cross. Through suffering and perseverance, we grow and find true meaning in life.
3. Preserving life by losing It
If we pursue the world at any cost, we risk losing our soul. True victory belongs to those who value what is eternal over what is temporary.
The Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9)
The Book of Genesis moves from: The creation of the world → The creation of humanity → The Formation of Different Languages and Nations. The people of Babel sought to “make a name for themselves” without acknowledging God.
Their unity was based on human ambition, not divine purpose. This passage reminds us that true unity must be centred on God, not on personal pride or selfish goals.
The journey of discipleship
Discipleship is not a single moment but a lifelong journey.
Every day, we must grow in faith, self-denial, and the willingness to carry our cross.
Am I advancing in my journey as a disciple?
