Why Bring a Lamp?

In yesterday’s Gospel reading, Jesus taught that the ‘seed’ bears fruit by being hidden. In today’s passage, He asks, “Why bring a lamp?” Through this question, He calls us to stand in the light and radiate it to others.

In modern leadership, the concept of ‘manifestation’ is often discussed. We must reveal the purpose for which we exist in this world. However, we cannot manifest what has not first been manifested to us. For manifestation to occur, we must listen attentively to our inner voice and be sensitive to the voice of the universe calling us.

Jesus affirms this truth, saying, “Nothing is hidden except to be revealed, nor is anything secret except to come to light.” Yet, He warns us to be cautious about what we listen to—not all voices from outside are true revelations.

Finally, Jesus says, “To those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.” Here, He emphasizes an attitude of abundance and gratitude. Often, we think, “If someone else receives, then I will miss out.” But the reality is that the universe holds enough for everyone.

True growth happens not when we give just a little more, but when we give ten times more than we do now.

Three lessons for us:

(a) Be a lamp placed on a stand: Each of our lives is like a burning lamp. It is best placed on a stand, meaning it should shine in a way that benefits everyone around us.

(b) Recognise and reveal your purpose: Discovering the unique purpose that God has set for our lives is crucial. Even among a hundred people, when our name is called, we experience a unique identity. Why, then, should we follow the crowd? Instead, we must embrace and reveal (manifest) our individuality.

(c) Live in gratitude: Instead of lamenting what we lack, we must rejoice in what we have and be grateful for it. Gratitude brings clarity and fulfilment, helping us recognise that everyone around us is also abundantly blessed.

In the first reading, the author encourages us, “Let us encourage one another!” The light within us should inspire and uplift others.

As Psalm 24 proclaims, “This is the generation of those who seek the Lord!”

When people look at us and our light shining, let them say, “S/He is the generation that seeks the Lord!”
