XXXIV Week in Ordinary Time, Tuesday
Revelation 14:14-20. Psalm 96. Luke 21:5-11
The other side
Jesus had the profound ability to see beyond the grandeur and elegance of the majestic temple to its inevitable destruction. Those who can perceive the ‘other side’ —whether it is of a leaf, a book, a statue, a chair, or even a person—possess the wisdom to remain composed, detached, and prepared.
First Reading Reflection [Rev 14:14-20]
a. Christ as the just judge: The vision of Christ with a sickle reminds us that He is both our Saviour and the ultimate Judge. This calls us to live with reverence, aligning our lives with His will in preparation for the final harvest.
b. The urgency of conversion: The imagery of the ripe harvest emphasizes the need for timely repentance. It challenges us to turn to God today, using the present moment to bear good fruit in our lives.
c. God’s sovereignty in judgment: The gathering of the grapes into the winepress of God’s wrath reflects His perfect justice. It reassures us that God will set all things right, motivating us to trust His plan and work for righteousness in the world.
Responsorial Psalm Reflection [Ps 96]
a. Worship as a universal call: Psalm 96 invites all creation to sing to the Lord, reminding us that worship transcends boundaries and unites us as one people glorifying God. Our lives, too, should proclaim His greatness.
b. God’s glory in our daily lives: The psalm calls us to declare God’s glory and wondrous deeds to all nations, inspiring us to live as witnesses of His love and faithfulness in our actions and words.
c. Hope in God’s justice: The psalm celebrates the Lord as the righteous judge who comes to establish equity. This assures us of His sovereignty and encourages us to place our trust in His just and merciful reign.
Gospel Reading Reflection [Lk 21:5-11]
a. The impermanence of earthly things: Jesus warns that even magnificent structures will crumble, reminding us to place our trust not in temporary things but in God, who is eternal and unchanging.
b. Faith during trials: Amid warnings of disasters and upheavals, Jesus calls us to remain steadfast in faith, assuring us that God is present with us through every challenge.
c. Witnessing in uncertain times: The passage urges us to see difficulties as opportunities to testify to God’s love and power, encouraging us to be bold witnesses of faith, even in adversity.
