Choices and Discernment

Today’s readings lead us into the profound reality of human decision-making, the role of divine wisdom, and the need for discernment in our choices. As Christians, we are called to choose with the heart of God, knowing that His Word pierces our innermost being and reveals our true desires. Let us reflect on how the readings of the day guide us in making choices aligned with God’s will.

1. Seeking divine wisdom: a priority in discernment

In the Book of Wisdom, King Solomon prays for wisdom, acknowledging that it is greater than wealth, power, or any earthly treasure. He declares, “I prayed, and understanding was given me; I called on God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me” (Wis 7:7). Solomon understands that the ability to discern rightly comes from a heart aligned with divine wisdom, which brings clarity, peace, and true fulfilment.

In our daily lives, we often face difficult decisions – regarding family, work, or moral issues. The world offers many competing voices and distractions. Yet, like Solomon, we are called to prioritize seeking God’s wisdom above all else. This wisdom is not simply knowledge, but the ability to see things through God’s eyes. We should ask ourselves: Do we pray before making important choices? Do we listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit? Wisdom should shape our decisions so that they reflect the values of the Kingdom of God rather than the fleeting desires of the world.

2. The word of God: a light for discernment

In Hebrews, we hear that the word of God is “living and active,” sharper than any two-edged sword (cf. Heb 4:12). It penetrates the depths of our hearts, discerning the intentions and thoughts hidden within. God’s Word doesn’t merely inform us; it transforms us, revealing both our deepest desires and the motivations behind our choices. Nothing is hidden from God’s sight – He knows us completely.

When discerning important choices, the Scriptures serve as a powerful tool for guidance. The word of God reveals truth and calls us to examine our hearts honestly. When we are confused, or when our choices seem unclear, we should turn to Scripture, allowing it to illuminate our path and uncover our true motivations. Are our choices grounded in love and truth, or are they influenced by fear, selfishness, or worldly concerns? The Bible helps us discern our choices not just on a superficial level, but at the core of who we are. Let us not shy away from allowing God’s Word to examine our hearts, trusting that it will lead us closer to Him.

3. The rich young man: discerning with courage and detachment

In the gospel reading, the rich young man approaches Jesus, asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mk 10:17). Though he keeps the commandments, Jesus invites him to a deeper level of discipleship, asking him to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow Him. The young man’s heart is revealed – he is attached to his wealth, and it hinders him from fully following Jesus. His choice is difficult, and he walks away saddened, unable to make the ultimate sacrifice.

In our own lives, we often face similar moments of choice where Jesus invites us to deeper trust and detachment. Discerning well means being open to letting go of anything that hinders our full commitment to God’s call. It might be wealth, status, or personal ambitions. Are we willing to give up what we hold dear to follow Christ more closely? True discernment often requires courage—the courage to embrace the unknown and the difficult, trusting that God’s plan for us is far greater than what we can see or understand.

The rich young man’s story reminds us that making the right choice sometimes involves sacrifice. Are we willing to part with whatever stands in the way of our relationship with Christ? Let us ask for the grace to discern courageously and choose Christ, who offers us treasures far greater than anything the world can give.

Our readings today challenge us to make wise, courageous, and faithful choices. By seeking divine wisdom as Solomon did, allowing God’s Word to penetrate our hearts, and discerning with the detachment and trust Christ asks of us, we can align our lives more fully with God’s will. May we be ever more attentive to the Holy Spirit, asking for wisdom in all we do, so that our choices reflect the values of the Kingdom of God.
