Enlarged parenthood
Today’s readings invite us to reflect on the concept of enlarged parenthood, where faith redefines the boundaries of family. Paul emphasizes that through faith in Christ, we all become children of God, united beyond earthly distinctions. Jesus further reminds us that true spiritual parenthood comes from hearing and keeping God’s Word.
1. Faith expands the concept of family
In the first reading, Paul declares that through faith, we become ‘children of God’ in Christ Jesus. This radical concept of parenthood is not limited to biological ties but extends to all who believe in Christ. We become part of a spiritual family, united in faith, transcending race, class, and gender. Enlarged parenthood means embracing a broader view of family, where our bond is rooted in faith and love for God. Our faith calls us to see each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, no matter our differences.
2. Obedience to God as the mark of true parenthood
In the gospel reading, a woman praises Mary for giving birth to Jesus, but Jesus shifts the focus, saying, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” He elevates obedience to God’s Word as the true mark of spiritual parenthood. Those who follow God’s will become part of His family, participating in this ‘enlarged parenthood’ through their faithfulness. True spiritual parenthood is not about physical birth but about hearing and keeping God’s Word. By doing so, we nurture and strengthen the family of God, growing in our role as spiritual mothers and fathers to those around us.
3. Nurturing the family of God through love and unity
Paul emphasizes that in Christ, distinctions and divisions fall away: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” As members of God’s family, we are called to nurture this unity by fostering love, understanding, and acceptance. Enlarged parenthood means embracing a universal love that unites all believers as one family.
