Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13. Luke 8:19-21

Members of God’s family

Today’s readings invite us to reflect on what it means to become part of God’s family. They challenge us to move beyond mere external practices and focus on aligning our hearts and actions with God’s will.

1. Living according to God’s will

The first reading from Proverbs reminds us that God directs the heart of the king like a stream of water, emphasizing His control over human affairs. Yet, true righteousness comes from following God’s will rather than merely external offerings. Verse 3, “To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice,” speaks to our need to seek what pleases God, not just what appears good. As members of God’s family, we are called to pursue justice and live with integrity, recognizing that our actions must be aligned with His commandments and desires for us. Our relationship with God is more than rituals; it is about living out His values of love, justice, and humility.

2. Listening to the word and acting on it

In the gospel reading, Jesus redefines family ties, saying that His mother and brothers are those who “hear the word of God and do it.” This emphasizes that being part of God’s family isn’t based on blood but on obedience to His Word. Hearing the Word alone is not enough. Jesus calls for active discipleship, where we embody what we learn from Scripture in our daily lives. We are invited to listen attentively to God’s Word and let it transform our lives. Being part of His family requires more than belief – it demands action.

3. Compassion for others

The first reading also warns against hearts filled with evil and cruelty, pointing out that the righteous will never turn a deaf ear to the cries of the poor and the needy. The call to be part of God’s family extends to how we treat others, especially the vulnerable. We cannot close our hearts to their needs and still claim to be living as children of God. A true member of God’s family is one who, like Christ, is moved with compassion. Our faith is demonstrated in our care for others, especially those in need.
