Marriage

The gospel reading revolves around divorce, marriage, and celibacy.

The Law of Moses gave provision for divorce or separation on account of ‘adultery’ (cf. Isa 24:1-2). This provision was explained in light of the sixth (‘do not commit adultery’) and the ninth commandment (‘do not covet your neighbour’s wife’). This provision gave rights to men and treated women as men’s property.

Jesus turns the understanding down. He takes his audience to the origin of marriage, i.e., the divine plan. God willed marriage at the beginning of creation. Marriage gives room for the spouses to celebrate their complementarity and reciprocity.

Further, Jesus speaks about the wilful renunciation of marriage, or celibacy. Celibacy calls for undivided love for God. This is possible only because of God’s grace.

The first reading brings to our attention the need for fidelity in our relationship with God. God has loved the people of Israel, and Israel must return it with obedience.

The fidelity of marriage and the commitment of celibacy are to be appreciated (Jubilee 2025 AD, bite 174).
