Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time – Tuesday

Jeremiah 14:17-22. Matthew 13:36-43

We’re the seeds!

In today’s gospel reading, the disciples ask Jesus, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” Jesus, through his explanation, reminds the disciples about their responsibility: “the Son of Man sows good seed; the field is the world; the good seeds are the children of the kingdom.”

Jesus’ explanation puts forward the sharp contrast between the Son of Man and Satan, the good seeds and the weeds, the people of the kingdom and the people of the evil one. The reader has to make a choice.

(a) The world is the field. Here we are, sown. We need to celebrate the world and get rooted in it. We are here to transform the world because we are from God.

(b) We must be different from the weeds and never compromise with evil.

(c) As we are the children of God, we must live a life worthy of our calling.

In the first reading, the people of Israel, who came as good seeds from the Lord, become weeds through their apostasy and idol worship. When God was about to send punishment on them, they cried out to him for mercy.
