Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time – Thursday

2 Kings 24:8-17. Matthew 7:21-29

Two types of life

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount comes to a close in today’s gospel reading. The speeches of the Rabbis usually end with a word-picture, and end with a choice. The word-picture is ‘building a house.’ The choice is to build it on the sand or on the rock.’

A disciple who listens to the words of Jesus must choose to build his house on the rock. The house is built on the sand quickly; but it is not resilient. It does not last long. On the other hand, building the house on the rock takes time, but the house can withstand any disaster. It lasts a long time.

We may respond to the sermon on the mount on two levels: in words; or in deeds. Responding in deeds is difficult, but a life that is rooted in the sermon on the mount withstands any difficulty.

In the first reading, we see how the Kingdom of Judah fell into the hands of the Babylonians. The people of Israel called the Lord  their God, but their deeds were different. They went after idolatry. Their kingdom collapses like the house built on the sand.

One who builds a house on a rock does so out of hope.  (Jubilee 2025 AD, bite 135).
