Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time – Tuesday

2 Kings 19:9-11, 14-21, 31-35, 36. Matthew 7:6, 12-14

Value. Sensitivity. Narrow gate.

Jesus gives three instructions in the gospel reading of the day:

(a) What is valuable must not be given to someone who does not know the value of it. The dogs don’t know what is clean and what is unclean. The pigs can’t differentiate between pearls and pieces of glass. Value is created by purpose. The pearls don’t serve any purpose for the pigs.

How do we handle the valuable in our life? Our resources, time, and energy are valuable. They are not to be drained on worthless things. And before engaging with any activity or work, we need to ask, ‘what is the purpose of my doing this?’ When there is a purpose the activity or work becomes valuable.

(b) We are asked to do to others what we want them to do to us. This calls for flipping roles, and changing tables and perspectives

When we live together it is necessary that we are sensitive to other person’s needs. Our selfish thoughts and self-centred perspective make us less sensitive. Being sensitive and letting go is painful. But our generosity is repaid soon.

(c) Finding and entering the narrow gate. Jesus offers two ways: broad, and narrow. We need to choose the narrow path. Choosing the narrow path or gate is painful again.

Narrow gate makes us celebrate our uniqueness. (Jubilee 2025 AD, bite 133).
