Sixth Week of Easter – Saturday
Acts 18:23-28. John 6:23a-28
I go to the Father
The gospel reading on the day prior to the solemnity of the Ascension concludes with the parting words of Jesus: “I came from the Father; now I leave the world and go to the Father.”
And he says, “Father himself has loved you.”
In the great events of baptism and transfiguration, Jesus heard the voice of the Father saying to him, “You are my beloved son.” Now, through the Cross, the disciples become the beloved of God.
Love is basically a promise. When we make this promise to others, we give that person assurance of our presence and accompaniment. If human love can push us into great heights, how much more God’s love can push us.
Love—this is the ‘return’ gift of Jesus before his ascension.
Jesus, by loving us, and by giving his life for us, showed us the quality of love.
Jesus ascends to heaven not to leave our lowly selves but to teach us that anyone who loves will reach greater heights.
