Sixth Week of Easter – Thursday

Acts 18:1-8. John 16:16-20

Your sorrow will turn to joy!

As the solemnity of the ascension draws near, the readings of the week begin to talk about the parting of Jesus. Jesus says to his disciples, “You will grieve for a while, but your sorrow will turn to joy.”

When these words are read in the light of the Last Supper, they mean to say that Jesus’ death will make us grieve for a while, but our sorrow will soon turn to joy when he rises to life.

When read in the context of the ascension, they mean that the ascension of Jesus makes us grieve, but the arrival of the Holy Spirit restores our joy.

Our sorrow turns to joy because of God.

In the first reading, we read about Paul’s ministry in Corinth. Paul is introduced as a tent maker here. He values work. He preaches the gospel on the Sabbath. He includes different people in his ministry. He identifies and celebrates the presence of collaborators in the ministry.
