Third Week of Easter – Monday
Acts 6:8-15. John 6:22-29
Higher stage!
Every one of us wants to be better off than the previous day – in health, wealth, soul health, social standing, and spirituality. Letting go of the lower and embracing the higher is growth.
In the first reading, the deacons begin their ministry after the apostles. Stephen, a deacon, filled with the Holy Spirit and power, works wonders. He is enquired by the Sanhedrin. Jesus, after Jesus his disciples, after them deacons – ministry grows. Though there is a distance between Jesus and us in space and time, proclamation goes on.
The gospel reading has two questions: ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ ‘What must we do to be acceptable to God?’ The people ask these questions of Jesus. The first question emerges because of their ignorance. The second question is because of their curiosity.
Jesus moderates their search. He guides the people to work for food that is imperishable. Jesus tells them that believing is the good work.
In the Responsorial Psalm (cf. Ps 119), the Psalmist exclaims, “I have chosen the path of truth.” Those who walk in truth choose the higher ones.
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why is it so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour, and my God.” (Ps 42:11). (Jubilee A. D. 2025, bite 72)
