Daily Catholic Lectio

Tue, 16 January 2024

Tuesday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time

1 Samuel 16:1-13. Mark 2:23-28

As the Lord sees!

The Lord enters the house of David (first reading); David enters the Lord’s house (gospel reading).

Since Saul acted evil in the sight of the Lord, the Lord rejects him and chooses David. The Lord bids Samuel to go to David’s house.

Samuel, who was being impressed by the stature and the height of Eliab, instructs Samuel ‘not to see as man sees.’ The Lord sees what lies inside.

In the gospel reading, the Pharisees find fault with the disciples of Jesus as they were eating grains on the Sabbath day. Jesus points out to them an event from the Old Testament, saying an exception too could become a law. Jesus presents himself as the Son of David and as the Son of Man.

Samuel is instructed to see as the Lord sees. The Pharisees are instructed to see as Jesus sees.

What do we learn from the readings of the day?

What is necessary is to be favourable in the eyes of the Lord, not in the eyes of the world.

It was an exception to see David enter the sanctuary of the Lord. Jesus makes this exception a rule.
