Fifth Day in the Christmas Octave
1 John 2:3-11. Luke 2:22-35
A light to reveal
‘Sweet is the light. It is pleasing to the eyes to see the sun’ (cf. Ecc 11:7). The expression ‘to see the light’ means ‘to be born.’ The symbol of light is crucial during Christmas celebrations.
In the gospel reading, the parents of Jesus come to offer him at the Temple. Simeon, who receives the baby into his hands, calls Jesus the light that reveals God to the nations. The people of Israel called YHWH their God. Simeon praises the God of Israel. The God of Israel is revealed to the nations through Jesus. Light attracts everything to itself. Jesus, as the light, attracts Simeon.
In the first reading, John, writing about love, says that love attracts everything to itself. The world consists of those who love and those who hate. Those who love live in light, while those who hate live in darkness.
We, who celebrate Christ as the light, may share the same light with others through love.
